A new beginning
It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you all to my first ever blog! In this blog, I invite you to join me on a life-altering, unchartered voyage into the world of international business! This is an exciting, new world for me, as I have always held a deep passion for science and have spent the past five years studying various disciples of science during my undergraduate’s degree. Wait a minute! If I am a scientist, then why am I talking to you about business? What would someone who studied biology and chemistry know about business? Absolutely nothing! Which is why this new path in my life is so exiting! I love challenging myself and feel a strong magnetic pull towards the world of business.
This transition in my career arose during my junior year of my bachelor’s degree. The time was getting closer and closer to taking my MCAT, and deciding on which medical schools to apply to, and instead of excitement, I felt dread. Was I truly making the right choice? Did I really want to spend my days wrapped in a lab coat, huddled over my desk, in some underground laboratory culturing microorganisms from sun-up to sun-down? In the beginning of my career I could have given you a clear, immediate answer -YES!
Yes, that was the life I wanted! However, as I would see, my enthusiasm for this career choice would dwindle to a dying candle flame. Unbeknownst to me, my father’s encouraging push towards business had become stronger, and I found myself wanting to mirror his career path. The lab coats and microscopes had become less appealing, and I began dreaming of briefcases and long, mahogany business tables.
I had decided in that moment that I wanted to be just like my father-something that I had tried to avoid practically my whole life. I guess you could consider my upbringing similar to many children with parents with strong careers. Generally, it seems, that parents always want their children to “take the reins” when they become adults-they want us to grow up to be just like them, and often times an improved version. Like many children before me, I tried my best to avoid my preselected career path outlain by my parents, and instead decided to be in charge of my own destiny. That destiny was a career in science. However, as we have just witnessed, sometimes what our parents want for us, truly is the best thing.
I would like you all to join me on this new path in my life! We shall see if I truly have what it takes to make it in the business world. Did I truly put away my lab coat forever? Can I use my background of science to create a lucrative career in pharmaceutical sales internationally? I sure hope so, otherwise it’s back to the laboratory for this ex-scientist.
Susan,
ReplyDeleteI am excited to continue reading about your blog and see where your path may take you. Many of my friends are taking the MCAT or finishing their first year of med school. I, on the other hand, majored in accounting and have a love of organization and numbers. I'm sure that your change in your career path was not an easy decision, but I can't wait to hear where it leads you.
Susan, I have made similar choices as yours. I started out in computer science and IT, but took business courses along the way. At first it was just to supplement my electives and give me a transition into being an IT manager, but one thing lead to another and now I find myself going for an MBA. I wish you luck though I doubt you need it.
ReplyDeleteI actually have a life story very similar to yours. I graduated and got my degree and went on to think, "Is this really what I want to do in life?" I'm excited to see if you can transistor into the business world. I currently thoroughly enjoy it for what it is. The relationships created and the wisdom learned that will help in life are priceless.
ReplyDeleteSusan,
ReplyDeleteThat’s so exciting that you found what you were looking for in terms of your career. I started my undergrad thinking I was going to be a pharmacist but after my first semester and multiple labs I decided science wasn’t my thing and committed to the business side of medicine. I aspire to be a successful medical device sales rep! I am looking forward to reading your blog every week and going on this journey with you!
Great story! I am looking forward to read more of your post as you discover your new journey.
